Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Crewman
The IRB Crewman course is an advanced lifeguard qualification that teaches candidates the skills required to operate as a rescue crewman as well as conduct basic operating procedures on an IRB.
Course Entry Requirements
- 16yrs of age
- Surf Lifeguard or Open Water Lifeguard Award
- 6 months operational lifeguard experience
- 400m pool swim in under 8 minutes
Course Duration
A minimum period of 20 hours 3 – 4 days of instruction is required per course.
Candidate Evaluation and Certification
Successful candidates are evaluated and certified by Lifesaving South Africa.

The IRB driver course is an advanced lifeguard qualification that teaches candidates the skills required to drive an IRB in surf rescue and patrol conditions as well as conduct basic maintenance and operating procedures on an IRB.
Course Entry Requirements
- 18yrs of age
- Surf Lifeguard or Open Water Lifeguard Award
- IRB Crewman Award and National Boat Skippers Licence
- 6 months operational lifeguard experience
- 400m pool swim in under 8 minutes
